The Tiimes of London tells the tale of a 26 year-old supermarket security guard in Villevieille, near Nîmes, in the south of France who was innocently texting his girlfriend when something bad happend to his iPhone.

“I was texting my girlfriend like I do every day,” said Yassine Bouhadi, ”when the phone made a noise like ’schplok’. A little bit of screen hit me in the eye and I had to remove it with a tweezer.”

france_exploding_phoneDespite Bouhadi’s credible description,  the Times says some doubt has been cast upon the veracity of his story. For one thing, the newspaper that first reported the incident — Midi Libre — talks of the phone imploding while the picture on this page looks as if something hit the screen, says the Times.

Others have questioned whether Bouhadi was engaged in a copy-cat explosion. At least one other iPhone has exploded in France, while other Apple devices have been reported to have exploded or caught fire in England and Seattle.

Apple said the incidents are isolated and that it’s conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the malfuctions. Some industry observers have speculated that the iPhone’s lithium ion battery might be the problem.
