Reports Predicts Red-Hot 2010 for iPhone, Smartphone Market

Dow Jones Newswires out of Stockholm reports of a study by UK-based research firm Informa PLC that smarthphones like the iPhone are expected to continue to power the mobile handset market, growing by 36% in 2010 in volume after 33.5% growth in 2009.
While smartphones will make up about 27% of the total number of handsets sold in 2010, they will account for about 64% of the mobile phone market’s profits because of their high average selling price, Informa added.
“As the incumbents try to meet the competition by revamping their portfolios and installing new operating systems such as Google Inc.’s Android, the smartphone landscape is likely to transform, possibly creating new leaders in the mobile handset market,” the research firm added.
Nothing surprising there. Expect a torrid 2010 for the iPhone and Android phones, with RIM trying to keep pace and traditional mobile phone leaders Nokia and Samsumg playing catch-up in value-share of sales.
