japan_iphone_casesThe TechCrunch network reports on Japan’s ongoing love affair with the iPhone.

According to Mobile Crunch, a survey conducted by market research company GfK, the 32GB model of the iPhone 3GS was the most popular phone in Japan in July. And the 16GB was ranked 9th. Both phones were released in Japan in June.

The popularity of the iPhone has prompted SoftBank BB (a sister company of Japan-exclusive iPhone provider SoftBank Mobile) to offer handmade iPhone cases priced at $1,000 each, according to CrunchGear.

The five designs, reportedly created under the supervision of an historian, are covered with special lacquer and gold dust.

The case designs show how Japanese warlords from the Sengoku period would probably use their iPhones if they lived today. Each case comes with a specially designed pouch, a booklet explaining the historical background of the design and a storage box, said CrunchGear.

The website said SoftBank isn’t planning to sell the cases outside Japan.
