verizonEven as AT&T, the exclusive carrier of the iPhone in the US, begins upgrades to its 3G cellular network, Verizon Wireless is deploying a 4G network that promises to be 10 to 60 times faster than 3G, reports Boston.com.

Boston and Seattle will be the first cities to be equipped with the next generation wireless network, according to Boston.com, citing a July 27 Verizon Wireless conference call with investors.

Verizon Wireless will use a technology called Long-Term Evolution, or LTE, to build its new 4G network. Some carriers are adopting a separate system called WiMax, said Boston.com.

The Boston website said that a report issued in February by Verizon Wireless chief technology officer, Dick Lynch, said Verizon Wireless’s LTE system has been tested at speeds almost 60 times faster than the company’s current 3G network.

The Boston and Seattle deployments are just the beginning, according to Boston.com, quoting Verizon Wireless president Denny Strigl, who said in the July conference call that the company intends to launch the new services in up to 30 markets next year, making the service available to as many as 100 million potential subscribers.

A key benefit of a 4G network for businesses and higher education would be vastly improved video capabilities which, among other things, would allow for two-way video conferencing.
