IDG News Service reports that smartphones and tablet PCs are poised to play a greater role in health care as doctors and patients embrace the mobile Internet, panelists at a mobile health technology conference in Boston said last month.

In a poll of 2,000 U.S. physicians by Manhattan Research LLC, IDG News Service reports that 71% of the respondents said that a smartphone is essential to their practice, and 84% agreed that the Internet is critical to their jobs.

IDG says Apple Inc.’s iPhone is popular with many young doctors, and there are signs that the iPad tablet has a future in health care.

Kaweah Delta Health Care District in Visalia, Calif., already has 25 company-owned iPads, reports IDG, and expects that number to grow to 100 in the next few months, according to Nick Volosin, director of technical services. In addition, he said that about 50 doctors have bought iPads themselves.

Engagdet: Official: iPhone 4 jailbreak hits from iPhone Dev Team
The Library of Congress made it legal, MuscleNerd showed us it was a go, and now Comex and company have delivered the long-awaited jailbreak to the fourth rendition of iPhone. According to their new page JailbreakMe, the hack works right on the iPhone 4 (or 3GS, or 3G, or iPad, or…) itself, using via the handset’s Safari browser to reportedly break into most any iOS device. The servers are getting slammed pretty badly, and only a few Engadget editors have so much as seen the page pictured above so far, but rest assured we’re testing this as we speak and will have more details up soon.

Ars Technica: Ballmer (and Microsoft) Still Doesn’t Get the iPad

“The operating system is called Windows,” claimed Steve Ballmer when asked about Microsoft’s plans for the tablet/slate/pad form factor at the company’s annual Financial Analyst Meeting on Thursday. He expressed dismay at the iPad’s strong sales figures, “[Apple has] sold certainly more than I’d like them to have sold,” he said. Ballmer then promised that Windows-powered devices will be shipping “as soon as they are ready,” going on to explain that they would get a boost from Intel’s low-power Oak Trail platform next year.

The message was clear: Microsoft still doesn’t understand why its Tablet PC concept has repeatedly bombed over the best part of a decade.

“Apple has confirmed their official retail stores will be closed for one hour tomorrow, from 4-5 PM, in order to prepare for the launch of the iPad 3G. Since the iPad with only WiFi had a major launch earlier this month, many thought Apple would not try to gather the crowds for the 3G version. “Setting a high bar for its debut in the advertising business, Apple Inc. aims to charge close to $1 million for ads on its mobile devices this year and perhaps even more to be among the first, ad executives say.

Apple is hitting the road to showcase its new mobile-device advertising capability, dubbed iAd, and has indicated it could charge as much as $10 million to be part of a handful of marketers at the launch, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The option of a lawsuit “is available because search is not the appropriate method in this situation,” Thomas R. Burke, a media lawyer and partner in the San Francisco offices of Davis Wright Tremaine, told CNET. He said the search warrant violated a California journalist shield law designed to limit searches of newsrooms.”

“Apple wants the fastest chip for its mobile devices and has bought another chip maker to gain an edge over its competitors.

Apple has acquired a small Austin, Tex., company called Intrinsity, known for making zippy versions of a computer chip often found in mobile devices.
