As App Store Celebrates 1st Birthday, Apps Top 63,000
WEDNESDAY, JULY 8, 2009 -- The App Store was launched a year ago this week and to celebrate the occasion Apple has decked out the store with a celebratory graphic and has shone a spotlight on two dozen apps it considers exemplary.
A little fizzy ad-prose is also provided:
"Light a candle and cue the music. Okay, forgive us for sounding like doting parents, but we're just so proud -- having watched the App Store go from promosing newcomer to full-fledged revolutionary. To celebrate its first birthday, we've gathered some of our favorite games and apps. Part fun. Part function. Entirely amazing."

The 24 apps Apple chose to spotlight include 12 games and 12 "apps." This latter selection includes a few of note to business: E*TRADE Mobile Pro; Brushes (it spawned a New Yorker cover); Instapaper Pro, the read-it-later gem; instant messagener BeejiveIM 3.0 With Push; AP Mobile; and DailyFinance from AOL.
According to Mobclix, there are about 63,000 apps available in the App Store (of those, about 13,000 are games). DigiBeat calculates that there are about 300 new apps being released every day. [PAB]
