Next iPhone to Be Outfitted with Video Micro-Projector?

Apple and Foxlink LogosTUESDAY, JULY 7, 2009 -- DigiTimes, which covers the IT supply industry in Taiwan and China, reports that Taiwan-based Foxlink has "stepped up development" of micro-projecters and that Apple is one of the customers.

This leads to speculation that the iPhone, which became capable of recording video with the release last month of the 3GS may, before too long, be able to project video onto an external surface.

"International brand vendors, including Nokia, Samsung Electronics and Apple," said DigiTimes, "reportedly all plan to launch handsets with built-in micro projectors by the end of this year, indicated ... sources, adding that Foxlink is likely to benefit from the emerging trend due to its strong business relationships with Nokia and Apple."

Whether Apple breaks with its tradition of launching new iPhones in June and July to bring to market a micro-projector-capable iPhone in time for the holiday shopping season is open to debate.

MacRumors notes that "micro projectors are just making their way into phones," citing the recent availability in Germany of a stand-alone micro-projector from Samsung.

iPhones with the ability to project video could be a boon to businesses that don't want to invest in higher end, bulky projection equipment.

Also, Tthe speedy maturation of video capabilities on the iPhone will be welcome news to business users who are debating the robustness of the Apple phone for corporate uses. [PAB]
